UK Mayors Pledge To Stop The Flood Of Junk Food Ads On Our Streets

For the first time, Mayors from across the country have joined forces to protect the health of children.

Three girls, 2 with long blonde hair and one with long brown hair, are standing in front of a billboard that reads 'Young activists bought this ad space so junk food giants couldn't.'

In a big move for child health, nine UK mayors have backed Jamie Oliver’s #AdEnough campaign to stop the relentless bombardment of outdoor junk food advertising. Joining forces, the group has committed to banning junk food marketing across the public transport networks and public spaces they control. This is a huge win for child health!

Children in the UK are exposed to 15 billion junk food adverts online and 3.6 billion on TV every year. That doesn't even include all of the ads we see on our buses, high streets and school routes. This advertising aims to create lifetime loyalty to these brands and ensures their products take the spotlight in young people's minds. We've #AdEnough which is why we took over billboards across this country to give kids a commercial break.

We're thrilled these mayors from across the UK are joining the fight to stop children being exposed to harmful outdoor junk food advertising.

Here's more on our reaction to the news:

Politicians have the power to change the food system, and it’s amazing to see Metro Mayors taking a stand and putting children’s health first. We need more of this to protect the health of future generations.

For far too long young people have been continually exposed to junk food ads on our journeys to school. I'm glad to see my local Mayor taking a stand.

It's a no-brainer that junk food ads should be restricted on and around public transport in Greater Manchester. I'm really pleased to see local politicians recognise the importance of children's health.
