We welcome House Of Lords' recipe for health

The House of Lords latest report calls for Government action following insights submitted by a Bite Back panel in Westminster in May.

In May 2024, Bite Back activists Harrison, Emmanuel and Anisah attended the House of Lords Food, Diet and Obesity Committee to present their insights and experiences growing up in a flawed food system. This was Bite Back's first panel in the House of Lords, coinciding with the launch of our report, "Are Food Giants Using Child-Appealing Tactics Responsibly?".

Today, the House of Lords Food, Diet and Obesity Committee launched a report, calling for a ban on junk food ads in various formats, along with other measures to protect child health, including a review of the school food standards. Titled: “Recipe for Health: A plan to fix our broken food system”, this analysis explores how to end the public health emergency of unhealthy diets and build a healthier future for all. This is a pivotal moment for Bite Back, as the report reflects our asks to the House of Lords, and builds hope for a better future for young people. Below is a statement from Bite Back activist Harrison on the House of Lords report:

Harrison outside Westminster 2024

"I am delighted by the House of Lords' recommendations to extend junk food advertising restrictions, review school food standards and extend free school meals.

If the Government really believes in creating the “healthiest generation of children ever”, then they need to support us with action and bring these recommendations in as soon as possible. This is an opportunity to change that and protect the futures of millions of children from food related health problems.

Every day, I am bombarded by marketing from the junk food giants — it's become the cultural wallpaper. Whether it's on social media, at bus stops, or even on TV, these ads are everywhere. Is it any wonder it's junk food playing a starring role in children’s minds? We’re surrounded by a food environment that sets us up to fail.

I hope these recommendations lead to real, lasting change so no more children grow up under the same constant pressure from junk food marketing or face the postcode lottery of school food that we have."

Let's make sure the Government hears these recommendations loud and clear to put child health firmly on the agenda. Bite Back activists are at the forefront of change, but we need your help to make this a reality. Sign our letter to Keir Starmer today, and ask him to meet with our young activists.
